The redevelopment of Brownsville sought to preserve the Commercial Historic District with a combination of adaptive reuse of existing historic structures, demolition and new construction. This project involved adaptive reuse of an existing 5-story “GC Murphy” building with a new building and parking lot. The location is across Market Street from Snowden Square Park, a community green with bandstand and other historic features. The building has common areas and first floor covered parking for the residents, commercial tenant space on the first floor and 24 senior apartment units on the upper floors. The project was financed with PHFA PennHOMES and LIHTC.
