The Windber Grand Ballroom was erected by the Berwin Corporation as the focus of their Recreation Park in 1906. The ballroom was an open-air dance pavilion that was keystone for community celebrations for over a hundred years. The Borough of Windber wished to extend the Grand Ballroom’s service time through the cold winter and the hot summer months by installing central heating and cooling systems while modernizing the facility. The renovation extended to creating accessible restroom facilities along with a catering kitchen, bar area and a bride’s area. We carefully preserved the maple ‘sprung’ dance floor; this floor will actually ‘bounce’ in the rhythm of the dancing and was common at the time of construction. The dance floor is spanned by five substantial heavy wood trusses that support a soaring ceiling that is the signature feature of the Grand Ballroom. In order to preserve this feature we installed the roof insulation on the exterior of the original structure while reroofing the structure. We added a ‘grand’ entry porch and a large deck to accommodate larger crowds and create a stronger connection to the park. Virtually invisible remedial structural work was performed in order to repair damaged members and extend the service life into the next century.
