A former three-story Riverview Elementary school building has been reused and adapted for 30 apartments for seniors in the community of Natrona Heights. The new senior residence is situated with walkable access to many community services, recreation areas and public transportation. As typical of schools built in the 1920’s, grade was at mid-level between the basement and first floor. The historic entrance and monumental stair were preserved in place. Excavating and re-working the grades allowed a new at-grade entrance to the lower level. A community room accommodates large gatherings with its abundant space, high ceilings, outdoor patio, and kitchen. Other services in the building include supportive services, management office/conference suite, wellness suite, indoor fitness room, central laundry, hair salon and multi-purpose activity room. The exterior of the building was restored, and the addition was designed to be complimentary to the building’s original style and color. The apartments boast large windows for substantial natural light but were partially infilled to utilize standard window units and control costs. The project is certified to the DOE Zero Energy Home program requirements and to the 2015 Enterprise Green Communities requirements. The project was financed by LIHTC and PHFA PennHomes.
