The Morning Sun School was constructed in 1934 and is the largest building in East Vandergrift, emphasizing its symbolic importance and providing education of the children of these first generation immigrants. The main entrance features three sunbursts that recall the former name of the village, ‘Morning Sun’. The existing classrooms and an addition will be utilized for 42 apartments for the 62+ senior community. Severe deterioration of the structure required much of it to be rebuilt. Because of the existing building window arrangement and stair tower locations, there are a large variety of apartment layouts to choose from, as well as spacious common amenities. The project will be certified to the 2020 Enterprise Green Communities program and Energy Star for Multi-Family Homes. Financing provided by PHFA LIHTC/PennHOMES.
