Karen L. Welsh, R.A., President.
As president of UpStreet Architects, Inc. (previously Welsh + Harley Architects) of Indiana, Pennsylvania,
Karen Welsh is focused on designing affordable family, elderly and special needs housing, as well as related
community and service facilities. Of special concern is the design of buildings that are efficient. She strives
to utilize new technologies and allocate resources effectively to lower maintenance and operating costs.
There is a special teamwork attitude required for the affordable housing industry. Ms. Welsh enjoys the details
of the financing applications, the nuances of client preferences and ensuring the constructability of the final
design. While involved in all aspects of the project, she is also responsible for the firm's business management.
Ms. Welsh is involved with several professional organizations. She is an active member of the National Association
of Home Builders, Pennsylvania Housing Research Center, U.S. Green Building Council, Pennsylvania Association of
Housing and Redevelopment Agencies and National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. She is also a NAHB
National Green Building Program Verifier.
Ms. Welsh earned her bachelor of Architecture from Carnegie-Mellon University
in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She is a registered architect in Pennsylvania and
West Virginia. Since then she has continued her education with classes and
seminars in housing opportunities, historic preservation and technology, green
building techniques and small business management. She is also
a NAHB National Green Building Program Verifier.

Thomas R. Harley, R.A.
A principal partner with UpStreet Architects (formerly Welsh + Harley), Mr. Harley has
designed a wide variety of projects and building types throughout Western Pennsylvania
and Indiana County. He is experienced in providing design and construction services for
low income, elderly and family residents in single building, townhouse and walk-up apartment

Viola Audi, Intern Architect
Viola joined UpStreet Architects in 2004 as an Intern Architect. She graduated from Odessa State Academy of Architecture and Construction with the equivalent of a Masters degree in Architecture and Design. At the Same time, Viola graduated from Odessa State Art School with an Artists degree, where she studied all aspects of art, design, sculpture, drawing and painting, and the history of the arts. |
While working toward completing the Intern Development Program with a goal to become a registered architect, she gained experience in various areas of Architecture including design, drawing development, project management, architectural specifications, weaving lighting with architecture, and the incorporation of Green Design. Viola has been preparing various project presentation renderings and color selection boards for both exteriors and interiors, applying the knowledge of interior design, decorating and art skills. Viola is part owner of InHouse Architects, LLC., and is currently serving as the architectural representative for the Historical Architectural Review Board for the Borough of Saltsburg, PA.

Mark Bates, Project Manager
Mark joined UpStreet Architects in 2000 with extensive experience in the areas of architecture, zoning and code enforcement. He has worked as zoning and code officer for Richland Township in Johnstown, Pennsylvania as well as the Code Enforcement Official for Cambria-Somerset Council of Governments in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. |
Mr. Bates earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In addition, Mark has worked as a tenant coordinator and in architectural design and development for Crown American and Zamias Developers both of Johnstown. He has also completed courses and seminars in computer related design, code enforcement, zoning, housing rehabilitation, fire prevention and municipal planning. Mark is part owner of InHouse Architects, LLC.

Barry V. Beatty, Senior Project Manager
Barry returned to his home area to join UpStreet Architects, Inc. as Senior Project
Manager in 2002. He brought more than 17 years of experience in Project Management,
Geology/ Hydrogeology, Environmental & Site Engineering Design, Geotechnical
Investigation, and Material Testing/ Construction Inspection to the firm. Previously,
Mr. Beatty was head of the Construction Management Department of Dewberry & Davis,
LLC, Engineers and Architects in Baltimore, Maryland, where he managed a staff
of eight Construction Managers.
|
He has worked in all phases of the construction process from proposal, to feasibility
studies, to design development, to contract document development, through the construction
phase and remediation.
He is a graduate of the University
of Pittsburgh at Johnstown in Johnstown, Pennsylvania with a Geology/Civil
Engineering Bachelor’s Degree. He also held the following
certificates: WACEL Soil Technician I & II and Concrete Technician; FEMA
Disaster Housing Inspector; Troxler Gauge Certification. He is also a NAHB National
Green Building Program Verifier.
Since coming to our firm, he has worked with various clients and project teams
as the Project Manager for various Architectural projects from Application stage
through the design, construction, and warranty phases. He has also attended various
ICC code training courses. He is a LEED Accredited Professional and has acted
as the LEED project manager for LEED projects for submission to USGBC He is also
a NAHB National Green Building Program Verifier.

Rick Brawley, Drafter
Richard Brawley comes to UpStreet Architects with an Associate in Specialized Technology Degree he
Received from Triangle Tech. He brings his experience in Architectural Computer-Aided Drafting and Design Technology as well as residential design theory and residential engineering.
Rick is also a veteran of the United States Army (Infantry).

Nicholas S. Costantino, R.A., R.L.A., Senior Architect
Nicholas serves the staff as Senior Architect. Mr. Costantino is a registered
architect and landscape architect with over 30 years
of experience, including 14 years as an owner/operator of his own architectural
firm. He has extensive background in all phases of the building construction
trades as well as design experience in several types of facilities. He earned
his
Bachelor
of
Science
in
Landscape
Architecture
with
a
minor
in Architecture from Penn State University. |
He is the recipient of numerous
civic, engineering and architectural professional awards. Nick serves
on the Board of The Redevelopment Authority of Somerset County, is a
retired Pennsylvania Army National Guard Engineer Officer, and had previously
served
as a committee member for the Windber Revitalization Committee.

Sam Hollopeter, Drafter
Samuel joined UpStreet Architects, Inc. as an intern drafter in 1998 during his junior year at Indiana Senior High School. He works on the preparation of construction documents for commercial and residential structures. He studied computer aided drafting and design at the Indiana County Technology Center, and is adept at working with both Macintosh and Windows based platforms, VectorWorks and AutoCAD software. |
Samuel graduated Magna Cum Laude from Pennsylvania Highlands Community College with an Associates Degree in Production Industries Technology. He is also part owner of InHouse Architects, LLC.

Kelly Moreau, Drafter
Kelly joined UpStreet Architects in June 2003. She has an Associates Degree
in Specialized Technology for CADD from Pittsburgh Technical Institute. Helping
her family build four houses over the past 15 years definitely played a large
part in her career decision. After working in the Interior Design group at
Burt Hill Kosar Rittelmann for 5 years, she decided to work closer to home.
So, she comes to us with a good working knowledge of interior finishes, furniture,
interior construction and space planning. |
Kelly meets with clients, puts together
full sets of architectural construction documents for commercial and residential
projects, meets with product representatives, organizes lunch and learn
presentations, and manages the Interior Finishes Library. She resides in
Indiana with her family.

Timothy L. Morris, Drafting Manager
Tim is the Drafting Manager for UpStreet Architects, Inc. He has been involved
in architectural drafting, construction, project management,and planning since
the late 1980s. Tim graduated summa
cum laude from Indiana University
in Indiana, Pennsylvania with a B.A. degree in geography and regional planning.
As a student, he received the Departmental Academic Award for superior scholarship
and professional interest in Geography and Regional Planning. He is
actively involved with community revitalization projects and has a strong
interest in history of the built environment. When Tim is not at the office helping
clients achieve their goals, he enjoys an active lifestyle with his wife and children.

John Pershing, Senior Drafter
John joined UpStreet Architects in 1995. He is experienced in project management
as well as in the preparation of construction documents for commercial and
residential structures. He holds the following BOCA Certifications: 1 & 2
Family General; 1 & 2 Family Plumbing; and 1 & 2 Family Mechanical.
He earned an associate degree in Architectural Drafting and Design from Triangle
Tech in Dubois, Pennsylvania.

Jessica Riffer,
Intern Architect/Project Manager
Jessica Riffer joined the firm in 1995 as a Summer Intern. She continued to work summers and vacations at
UpStreet Architects, Inc. throughout her college career. After graduating from The Pennsylvania State University
in 1999 with a Bachelor of Architecture, she joined the UpStreet staff full-time as an Intern Architect / Project
Manager. She has completed the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards' Intern Development Program
and is preparing to take her professional registration exams.

Over the past eight years, Jessica has gained experience in
many aspects of architectural practice including client interaction, programming, design, specifications,
production and coordination of construction documents, submissions to code agencies, and construction management.
Mrs. Riffer is also part owner of InHouse Architects, LLC.

John B. Shaffer, Jr., Project Manager
John joined UpStreet Architects, Inc. after working for a number of years with the Carpenter's Union of Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania. He has worked on a wide variety of projects, involving all stages of commercial, industrial and
residential construction. His experience as the Code Official/Zoning Officer for the Cambria-Somerset Council of
Governments in Johnstown, Pennsylvania makes him cognizant of the details needed to acquire all necessary permits. |
John is a NAHB National Green Building
Program Verifier. He holds the following BOCA certifications: 1 & 2
Family Dwelling Building Inspector; Accessibility Plan Review; Property
Maintenance Inspector; and Existing Housing Inspector. John also holds
state certifications as an Asbestos Inspector and for confined spaces
safety.

Scott A. Shook, Drafter
Scott brings a wealth of CAD design and operational experience to UpStreet Architects in security, lighting, electrical systems and architectural working drawings. He has an Associates Degree in Specialized Technology, Architectural Drafting and Construction with CAD Technology from Triangle Technical Institute in DuBois, PA and Scott is NICET certified (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies) in fire protection engineering technology fire alarm systems. In his spare time Scott enjoys golfing and hunting.

John D. Springer, Intern Architect
John Springer joined the firm as an Intern Architect in 2003. Mr. Springer has
over 15 years of experience in all aspects of architectural practice from initial
client contact through construction administration. He has worked for a variety
of firms in Western Pennsylvania and Massachusetts while completing his studies
at Boston Architectural Center in Boston, Massachusetts. He won the Boston
Society of Architects scholarship design competition for outstanding design
of a community center/art school/public library complex in 2001. John is also
part owner of In-House Architects.

Tom Davis,
Engineering Designer/Senior Drafter
Tom joined UpStreet in July 1999. He brings 19 years experience in drafting and
engineering design, as well as 13 years of field experience in construction
materials inspection. He has worked on many health care, educational, and commercial
projects in Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Florida and Texas. Tom holds
an Associates of Applied Science in Engineering Design Graphics with distinguished
honors from Austin Community College in Austin, Texas. |
He is NICET Level III certified in concrete, soils, asphalt, and in Geotechnical Exploration, Laboratory and Construction and has completed a lighting design course of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America. Tom is part owner of InHouse Architects, LLC.

Robert Long,
Senior Engineer (Structural), P.E.
Robert has extensive experience in construction management, construction/civil
engineering, project management and field construction supervision for general
contracting and design-build construction services. He has the ability to provide
complete professional design services from the conception of the project through
to its completion. Mr. Long holds of Bachelor of Science in Engineering from
the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. |
In addition he has studied graduate engineering at the University of Pittsburgh and business law at West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buchannon, West Virginia. He holds the following Department of Army Certificates of Training: Construction Contract Negotiating; Network Analysis System; Advanced Network Analysis; Soils Inspection and Welding Application. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of Pennsylvania and Florida, and a licensed general contractor in the state of Florida.

Geoffrey Miller,
Senior Engineer (MEP), P.E.
Geoffrey Miller joins UpStreet Architects, Inc. as Senior Engineer. Mr. Miller
has P.E. registration in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland.
He has designed electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems for commercial,
industrial, educational, health care and retail facilities. Mr. Miller designs
site utility systems, performs photometric studies for site lighting, and develops
energy modeling of HVAC systems. |
He has worked as an independent
consultant and as a project manager for various engineering firms in Pennsylvania
and West Virginia. He has published and presented papers for the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

Sue Jablunovsky
Sue Jablunovsky joined the staff of UpStreet Architects in December 2006.
As a part of the front office staff, her responsibilities include handling
shop drawings, preparing transmittals, printing specifications, blueprints,
and mailings. Sue also manages UpStreet documents and photography. Outside
of work, she enjoys spending time with her family. Sue is also a seamstress,
and scrapbooks in her free time.

Sherrie Shannon-Barton,
Office Manager
Updated bio to come. Sherrie has been employed with Thomas R. Harley, Architects since 1992
originally as a receptionist, secretary, administrative assistant and office
manager and working for Thomas R. Harley, Architects and
Welsh and Harley Architects which later became UpStreet Architects, Inc. In
1996, Sherrie started property management for three buildings Tom owned in
Downtown Indiana. |
In 2000 she became partners with Tom and formed a company
named Dynamic Real Estate Management, LLC and now manages 10 commercial buildings.
Also in 2000, Sherrie started taking classes for her Real Estate License and became a licensed real estate agent. In January of 2004, Sherrie is scheduled to take the Broker's Exam and is looking forward to opening her
own Real Estate Brokerage Office in the near future.
For fun, Sherrie also manages the Downtown Indiana Theater. This theater
was closed for more than twenty years and has been re-opened for two years.
Sherrie is a licensed projectionist and on any given evening can be found
popping popcorn and serving customers who still can't believe they can see a
movie in the Downtown Theater again and still buy popcorn for $1.00.

Janet Wikstrom
Janet joined UpStreet in 2005 as a recent resident of the Indiana area. She has
twenty years of experience in the Accounting field and worked in the Pittsburgh
area before joining UpStreet. Within the office, Janet handles all financial
paperwork and manages accounts. She is a graduate of Robert Morris University.
